ANSI File Format of Outlook: Outlook 97, 98, 2000 and 2002 use ANSI file format for their .pst files. This format has a maximum size of 2 GB (231 bytes) file size limit and does not support Unicode.

Unicode File Format of Outlook: From Outlook 2003 and onward, the standard format for .pst files is Unicode. It has 20 GB file size limit. The use of 64-Bit pointers instead of the 32-Bit which is in ANSI file format, pointers of the earlier version allowed overcoming the 2 GB limit.
